Sports Journalism Contest
Show us that you have what it takes to be a great sports journalist! Our contest challenges teens to submit a video or essay based on the assignment: “Investigate and report on how athletes at your school or in your neighborhood are inspired by professional athletes.”
The contest is open to middle school and high school students who live or attend school within 75 miles of Sleep Train Arena.*
Winners will be announced at a Sacramento Kings game in early December 2015 and students will receive exclusive Kings and Bee prizes and experiences. Videos and essays must focus on the selected assignment theme as noted above.
Judging will be based on accuracy of information, use of outside research, creativity, writing and or video quality.
Students may enter in one or both categories. Only one entry per student per category is allowed.
Video: 60-90 seconds
Essay: 500-750 words
October 10: Contest begins
December 4: All contest entries due
December 10: Winners Announced
Winners & Prizes:
Winners will be selected by a panel of judges and voting will be based on accuracy of information, use of outside research, creativity, writing and video quality. Prizes include:
- Opportunity to help Grant & Jerry call a game on TV.
- Meet & greet with Coach Karl
- Slamson & dancer appearances.
- Kings VIP experiences.
- Cover a Kings game with a reporter from The Sacramento Bee
- VIP Tour of The Sacramento Bee

*Students must live or attend school within 75 miles of Sleep Train Arena. This contest is also open to middle school and high school teachers and students that are involved with the Modesto Bee’s NIE program.
